Abstract
The impact of hardware impairments on the array radiation characteristics of a fully integrated 8 × 8 5G mmWave phased array is presented. The inherent hardware impairments arising in the various building blocks (2 × 2 antenna unit cell, quad-channel Tx/Rx beamformer chip, power dividers, and feed network) of the proposed phased array are captured through simulations. The effects of systematic and random hardware impairments on the radiation characteristics of the proposed 5G mmWave phased array are simulated and presented. The hardware impairment values are randomly varied over 100 iterations, and their impact on peak power, sidelobe level, and beam pointing angles are analyzed. Hardware impairments show a maximum variation of 1.6dB in the main lobe, -12dB first sidelobe level, and 3° beam pointing error for a uniformly weighted array.
