Abstract
In this work we present an optimization of the energy and position resolutions for use in gamma-ray interactions in a long bar of NaI(TI). This work focuses on tuning the effective optical attenuation coefficient to approximately the same length of the bar. This is achieved by altering the surface of the scintillator in a systematic manner. We present data obtained in the laboratory from measurements of eighteen bars of NaI(TI) that have been manufactured with various treatments of the surface. This process results in an improvement in position resolution by a factor of four over a polished bar with only a corresponding 20% decrease in energy resolution.
