Abstract
In recent years, cold spraying (CS) has emerged as a promising technology for rapid repair or remanufacturing applications, particularly for heat- and oxidation-sensitive materials. Considering the characteristics of the CS process and its boundary conditions, an appropriate pre-machining of the damaged area is often required. The process of pre-machining implies the complete removal of existing damaged areas as well as geometrical preparation, so that the CS deposition for material filling can be performed in the best possible way to conduct the reconstruction of the component. The present work proposes design conditions for pre-machining, which involve the definition and implementation of a pre-machining target geometry that appropriately suits to the original damage pattern. Requirements for the target geometry are specified to fulfil the boundary conditions for the subsequent repair process by CS. The pre-machining process provides flexibility regarding different damage patterns, enabling the handling of complexity, and can be well integrated into the CS repair process. The goal of the proposed method is to adjust the geometrical requirements to the constraints given by the repair process to enable repaired component qualities that fulfill property profiles equally well as respective new parts.
