A sophisticated 3-tier alert system capable of delivering ad-sponsored SMS/email alerts triggered by predefined events is proposed. The system is designed to cater to three groups of users, namely the advertisers, subscribers, and administrators. The administrators oversee day-to-day operations of the system, subscribers select the type of news or event updates they wish to receive, and advertisers bid for advertisement space tied to specific news or news events. A functional prototype complete with workflow management has been built using best-of-breed open source components like Linux, Plone, Zope, Apache Lucene, Nutch, and mySQL.
