Abstract
Conventional automobile braking technologies use friction to counteract the forward momentum of a moving vehicle. A part of a vehicle’s generated power is lost as excessive heat and makes it lower in energy efficiency. An alternative approach is to use a magnetic braking system that works based on eddy current generated in a rotating disc. This alternative approach is economical as it minimizes the wear and tear and also does not compromise on vehicle stability and maneuverability. In this experimental study, a magnetic braking system with a permanent magnet is developed. To identify an optimized combination for the best performing braking design, multiple parameters including disc material, disc thickness, the distance between magnets and discs, and magnetic intensity are used in the experiment.
