Abstract
In order to enable flexible grid topologies for single-phase systems, the design, operation, and control of microgrids both globally and locally become important. Bi-directional power flow, seamless operational transitions in the midst of disturbances and the integration of new technologies are all relevant in modern power systems. To enable such important functionality, we explore new additions to the rectifier and inverter controllers in an AC-AC converter with a topology containing few switches. A self-synchronization technique is used to allow for a more simple synchronization implementation while exhibiting stabilizing behavior. Also, additions will be made to the controller to control the voltage and ripple at the DC stage of the AC-AC converter. An AC-AC converter, with enhancements to its controller, can perform various operations and is hence useful in various scenarios that may be encountered during power system/microgrid operation.
