Abstract
This paper focuses on a consequent pole linear vernier hybrid machine for use in dry gravity energy storage systems. The consequent pole linear vernier hybrid machine acts as the main drive unit for raising and lowering a 50 ton piston that stores electrical energy as potential energy. Based on the magnetic gearing principles, this type of machine features high thrust force and efficiency at low speeds. The optimization of the consequent pole linear vernier hybrid machine was performed focusing on maximizing power factor and thrust force. Furthermore the force ripple of the designed consequent pole linear vernier hybrid machine was reduced by steppositioning. The machine performance was analyzed using finite element methods, and the results show that the machine can offer good performance in terms of power factor, thrust force and efficiency for the dry gravity energy storage application.
