Abstract
Loss and efficiency evaluation of induction motors (IMs) by summation of losses is based on sinusoidal drive. There are more and more cases of driving induction motors by a complete drive module (CDM). When the induction motor is driven by the converter, there is additional loss due to harmonics. The total loss and efficiency change due to harmonic losses. In this paper, the motor efficiency by CDM operation was compared with the motor efficiency by sinusoidal drive of the main supply. Recently, as the efficiency of the power drive system (PDS) becomes more important, not only the rated output point but also the motor efficiency by CDM at various operating points is required. To compare the efficiency and the loss difference between sinusoidal drive and converter drive, the tests are conducted according to IEC 60034-2-1, IEC 60034-2-3 and IEC 61800-9-2, and the results are analyzed.
