Abstract
In this paper, we combined an Electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) surface with a planar monopole, achieving a low-profiled (thin) antenna with high front gain and low back radiation. Since the EBG surface as the reflector is closer to the monopole than the usual design of utilizing a blank conductor reflector, this design results in a much more desired low profiled thin configuration. The antenna system can be utilized in RF designs that require directivity (i.e., high gain in one preferential direction) with minimal thickness, for example, radar and wearable devices.
