Abstract
A co-frequency and full-duplex (FD) underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system can significantly reduce the implementation complexity and further facilitate UOWC networking. However, the communication performance degradation caused by the backscattering is inevitable. In this paper, the characteristics and effects of the backscattering channel on the performance of a co-frequency and FD UOWC system are investigated by a Monte Carlo method, and two digital domain cancellation methods are proposed to reduce the self-interference (SI) caused by backscattering. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed methods can significantly improve the bit error rate performance in various conditions as compared to traditional methods, considering the effects of backscattering SI.
