Abstract
Diverging customer needs, volatile user requirements, and shortened product and technology life cycles are key challenges facing the automotive industry. We argue that the linear interdependencies in the automotive supply chain and the closed product development and production processes are outdated in this dynamic market. We suggest a new strategy on opening up innovation, development, production, and sales processes to facilitate new business models. A cyberphysical vehicle platform is introduced here. This platform provides open software and hardware interfaces. These open interfaces allow for adaptation to meet changing customer requirements and to address them effectively. Supply chain linear interdependence is addressed by allowing for a flexible value creating network. We provide insights into these concepts providing feedback from various top level management executives in the industry and along the supply chain. Managerial takeaways and insights are presented to establish further diffusion and adoption of the concepts.
