Abstract
Learning fitness motions via online courses is becoming increasingly popular due to its accessibility and affordability. However, existing video courses often place instructional subtitles at the bottom center of the screen. This layout tends to cause learners to constantly shift their gaze between the subtitles and video content, which can disrupt the learning process and causes unnecessary cognitive overload. In this paper, we propose a motion-following subtitle layout method to support online fitness learning in desktop and Virtual Reality (VR) environments. It places the subtitles close to the corresponding limbs by tracking the motions in the video, allowing learners to comfortably follow both the motions and subtitles without breaking the continuity of learning. The findings from the experiments provide strong evidence that the motion-following subtitle layout significantly improves both learning performance and overall experience.
