Abstract
This paper offers a model of what is involved in graduate students learning and faculty teaching those varieties of language or registers associated with a discipline/field. Drawing upon usage-based or cognitive functional linguistics, four related stages are identified: attention, intention, cooperation and role reversal imitation. The purpose is to encourage both a consideration and investigation of the model.
