Abstract
A polarization-independent multifunctional active frequency selective surface (MAFSS), which possesses electromagnetic switching and polarization selection functions, is proposed in this letter. Three compound modes of absorption, transmission, and reflection are attained in the same working band. The proposed MAFSS consists of a switchable transmission/lossy layer, an air spacer, and a switchable transmission/reflection layer. Each reconfigurable functional layer contains PIN diodes that can be controlled separately for different polarizations. Thus, the proposed design can achieve nine different working states in a single structure with dual-polarized properties. The equivalent circuit approach is employed to explain the physical principles of the proposed design. Finally, a prototype is fabricated for validation and the measured results show a good agreement with the simulated ones.
