Abstract
We report the development of a new experimental facility for basic research studies of the dynamic properties of materials and structures in 2-D and 3-D configurations to shock and impulse. The Direct Laser Impulse (DLI) Facility on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser was commissioned in November 2022. The facility takes advantages of new laser target designs for enhanced laser-surface coupling to enhance the laser produced shock environment. 1,2 The facility re-directs two of the 192 NIF laser beams to a test area of >1,000 cm 2 with laser energy of 4 - 22 kJ with pulse widths of 5 - 20 ns. The facility has the advantages of high reproducibility, high test area uniformity, and relativehigh shot rate. Operation of the facility is fully integrated with normal NIF operations complete with full suite of laser and test area diagnostics. Recent experimental results will be presented along with information on how prospective users can propose research and receive shot time on the facility.
