Abstract
The phenomenon of violent failures of overhead distribution transformers is defined and previous work is summarized. Results of the most recent tests with arcs in high temperature oil are given. The significance of the existing NEM standard for a minimum tank withstand capability is discussed, and methods of providing withstand capabilities greatly exceeding the minimum are given and evaluated.
