Abstract
Summary form only given. In the past few years the University of Maryland team has been working on various gyroklystron schemes, as possible drivers for future high energy accelerators. In this paper we describe our latest efforts focused on the design of the output cavity for the gyroklystron. This cavity was designed to operate in our latest experimental scheme, which is 17.14 GHz, second harmonic. A special feature of this cavity is that the output power is actually extracted radially from the output cavity, being drawn into the inner coaxial region of the system. This way we can achieve a complete splitting of the outgoing microwaves and the beam, which maximizes the efficiency and improves the zero-drive stability of the system. Furthermore, it facilitates high repetition rate operation and simplifies the feed to the accelerator structure.
