Abstract
This paper presents a method for generating stable reduced order macroscopic traffic models. Starting from the Payne-Whitham traffic model, a set of hyperbolic PDEs, Galerkin projection in conjunction with proper orthogonal decomposition is used. To enforce stability of the reduced order scheme, an extension of two methods developed for parabolic PDEs is presented in this paper. The performances of the aposteriori stabilization schemes are compared showing that, with an appropriate calibration process, the stabilized models have comparable prediction errors to the full order models.
