Abstract
Hybrid energy systems have become universally accepted owing to some techno-economic benefits. Thus, there is a need for the optimal sizing of such systems. The power demand of an off-grid power system that serves a rural community can be satisfied by solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind renewable energy alternatives if sufficient battery storage systems were integrated into the system. In this paper, the correct sizing of this installation is determined by using the meteorological data, demand data and stochastic energy models of the different components. The optimization technique used in the research work is particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the goal of reducing the total cost while still satisfying the power demand. The study’s findings can be used as a solution to improve the power system’s techno-economic performance and boost global access to a reliable power supply.
