Abstract
This paper presents the development of Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometer (OFDR) interferometer based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) for the Passive Optical Network (PON) monitoring. This monitoring system is expected to monitor the fiber fault in the Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) Passive Optical Network (PON), which will improve the efficiency and quality of the network services. The principle of the OFDR interferometer is based on FBGs reflection spectra. FBGs are inserted in the feeder fiber and distribution fibers. The FBGs reflection spectra will produce a beat frequency and will be observed through an RF Spectrum Analyzer. It is found that the system is capable to monitor up to 32 customers with downstream power received of 23.65 dBm while maintaining bit error rate (BER) of 10 -12 and 1.57 dB of excess power margin.
