Abstract
The major topic of most published projects concerning the simulation of heat treatment is the prediction of dimensional and shape changes of samples and simple components. This simulation work is usually very time-consuming and complex, and industrial applications are therefore really rare. ZF Friedrichshafen AG started with internal projects of heat treatment simulation. The main focus was the prediction of the core hardness on case-hardened transmission components. Compared to the prediction of distortion, this task is much easier to handle but the results are more robust and valid, and the positive effect for the design of components concerning geometry, material, and heat treatment is most beneficial.
Presented are the results of the application development work concerning the determination of TTT-diagrams for ZF case-hardening steels as well as the determination of quenching characteristics for the quenching oils used here. Various comparisons of calculated and measured hardness profiles show the good quality of the predicted results. Typical questions during the period of design for new components are presented and the answers are given by different examples of heat treatment simulation followed by the verification in experiments.
