Abstract
In Middle High German Marian poetry, one finds chains of metaphors describing and praising the Virgin. This article shows that not only the paradigmatic dimension of these images, i.e. their being connected by their meaning (Mary) in the dimension of Roman Jakobson’s axis of selection, but also their syntagmatic dimension in their concrete order is of great importance: it can generate a sujet. The Marian Song of Melk and Konrad’s von Würzburg ›Goldene Schmiede‹ display the miracle of Mary’s conception in a narrative syntagma of the tropes. In Konrad’s prologue, this is linked with the inspiration of the poet who becomes equal to the fruitful Mother of God.
