Abstract
Background: Home remedies (HR) are considered a resource for self-care in chronic diseases. The BMBF-funded, cluster-randomised HoPES3 study investigated the use of home remedies by elderly patients. The aim was to strengthen the aspects of spirituality, social activity and self-care (through advice on HR) in family medicine.
Research questions: Which measures are suitable for the self-care of elderly people? How high is the amount of HR users? What types of HR are used? What attitudes and motives do older patients have with regard to the use of home remedies?
Method: Development of information leaflets (Instructions for self-application of HR). Questionnaire-based survey of participating patients (n= 297). Guided interviews with patients (n=29).
Results: There were 17 information leaflets developed. At baseline, 33 % of the patients in the intervention group (IG) and 39 % of the control group (CG) used HR. After six months, 47 % (IG) and 35 % (CG) used HR. Central motives seem to be the strengthening of self-efficacy, the feeling of self-determination in dealing with one’s own health and the avoidance of too many medications.
Discussion and conclusion: The results can contribute to a better integration of the resource of HR into joint therapy decisions of elderly patients. Counselling on HR in the general practice consultation could be a low-threshold measure to specifically strengthen the self-efficacy and quality of life of older patients.
