Abstract
Placements in statutory agencies supervised by registered professional social workers are increasingly regarded as providing the only appropriate conditions for final year social work students. Written from the perspectives of a student, supervisor and practice educators, the chapter is grounded in the reality in many areas of the UK - that of a paucity of statutory placements and an attendant belief that alternatives are ‘second best’. This chapter challenges the ‘common sense’ of this evaluation and illustrates the conditions in which third sector placements can provide equally robust learning for students at all stages of their education. Drawing on pedagogic theory and research, the critical evaluation of one such placement provides a framework for practice educators which is widely relevant beyond the discipline of social work.
This edited collection written by practice educators, students and academics in social work is a resource for anyone who is responsible for ensuring quality placements for future professionals. It moves beyond conventional approaches to placement-finding, student learning, teaching and assessment, to inspire new thinking in the face of the seismic changes created by the current climate of austerity, cuts to services and over-regulation. Informed by globally and functionally diverse perspectives, its content is wide-ranging to include sustainability, student-led services, overseas placements, the value of the third-sector, the qualifications of practice educators, independent social workers, supporting students from minority groups, men in social work and their placement experiences, support for failing students, social media, and the visual arts. Framed within a critical analysis of social work as social action, the book offers practical, internationally relevant examples to show what is possible when student learning is shaped by practice imperatives and concerns. At a time of acute student-placement shortages for all professions, this book proposes original solutions to maintain high quality opportunities for students and professional education that are fit for purpose. It is designed to assist all those responsible for fieldwork education worldwide, both in social work and professions where practice learning is a requirement. With an emphasis on creativity and innovation it is also relevant for educators charged with developing work-based learning opportunities in health and social care disciplines.Involved in educating social work professionals?
