Abstract
A well-known scholar of Greek and Roman art, Woodford (British Museum) provides a succinct and excellent overview of some of the more important monuments of classical art, primarily sculpture (including architectural sculpture), painting, and mosaics. She also points out differences between Greek and Roman art that are largely culturally determined. The text is very well written and the illustrations are wonderful, with the vast majority of images being in color. The book is especially good as an introduction to key works of Greek and Roman art, but those those who have already studied Greek and/or Roman art and are looking for a succinct review of important works will also appreciate it. There is a glossary of proper names and terms, a succinct chronology, a section on ancient literary sources, and select readings of modern secondary sources. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers.
