Abstract
Library consultant Valerie Horton has created a thoughtful and inspiring manual on project management of complex and collaborative initiatives for libraries. Drawing from the works and expertise of leaders in many fields and using “theoretical models developed outside the library field," Horton provides a primer on management of initiatives that span library types (academic, public, consortia) and also span functions within libraries. Chapters include an introductory overview of project management concepts, information on defining the scope and scale of a project, and, most important, using innovative thinking and collaboration to complete a successful initiative. As Horton states, the book offers “a comprehensive examination of how to envision, launch, and manage large-scale, innovative projects across institutions.” Libraries of all types face declining budgets and are challenged by changing technologies, and collaboration with community, professional, and institutional partners will be one of the keys to continued relevance. This book offers the inspiration and tools to successfully initiate such collaborative projects.
