Abstract
This thesis, Colouring the Language of Spiritual Music, Research-based Word-Painting in the 21st Century: Portfolio of Original Compositions contains five musical compositions and an accompanying commentary presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music Composition at the University of Aberdeen in 2021. The research focuses on different aspects of word-painting. It investigates the more traditional aspects of this concept, and explores how these can be extended, with the overall aim to determine if word-painting is a viable way to colour the language of spiritual music in the 21st century. The portfolio comprises the following works, presented with a commentary: Requiem Novum a work for soprano soloist, mixed choir and orchestra; Ornaments in Water for double women's choir and double bass; Soft, in a Distant Dream I Walk for quadruple mixed choir; An Elemental Elegy, for mixed choir; Tschitta Saltuna, for mixed choir. The commentary focuses on the first three works since they have provided a natural development for the research in how to expand the word-painting concept. The individual chapters of the commentary discuss the word-painting aspects of research-based composition and show how these aspects are used to colour spiritual music.
