Abstract
After briefly reviewing the algorithms used to convert experimental data into fracture parameters, experimental results are presented from experimental studies conducted on both compact bending specimens containing mutually grown “thumbnailed” cracks through the thickness and naturally grown surface flaws in wide plates. Results are compared with analytical results and are used to explain certain phenomena observed with both thumb-nailing of cracks in compact bending specimen and in the analyzing of surface flaws.
