Abstract
The process by which living organisms and tissues exchange gases with their environment. In a common sense, respiration is the sum of the processes by which living organisms take up oxygen (O2) and eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) in order to provide energy. Respiration also can refer to the act of breathing with the lungs, consisting of inspiration and expiration.
