Abstract
In recent years, many medical centers have invested in information systems with medical and nursing related applications. Among these, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) is one of the major systems in use today. CPOE can effectively reduce medication errors that might arise with handwritten prescriptions (e.g. through illegibility, mistakes made in copying, typing errors). It allows verification that the correct medication and dose have been prescribed. In addition, it can be linked to guidelines, provide real time information, and improve resource utilization. CPOE can be used to alert physicians to potential medication errors or drug interactions with the goal of improving patient safety and healthcare quality. This article discusses CPOE's advantages over hand-written prescriptions in preventing medication errors and increasing patient safety. We also evaluate the role of the nursing staff in implementing CPOE. This component of computerized medical informatics can improve the accuracy of prescriptions and the quality of healthcare while saving time and enhancing efficiency.
