Abstract
Swedish playwright August Strindberg uses large amount of images and symbols within his work A Dream Play to simulate a dreamlike human life on stage. Through the transformation and rearrangement of different scenes, it is like the audiences are travel along the characters in play, experience the happenings in life, and then finally have enlightenment and growth. Every scene in the play is a life theatre stage for characters to perform which has direct link to their state of life. By applying the theory of spatial semantics, which systemized by French theatre semiologist Anne Ubersfeld, this paper will analyze how Strindberg arranges scenic spaces, and find out the functions of these spaces, in order to systemize the structure of the play.
