Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a virus pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Besides major respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, and meningitis, infection of the virus also causes conjunctivitis. Although current studies revealed that the presentations in the eyes of COVID 19 patients are relatively rare, the presence of SARS-Cov-2 in ocular secretions and conjunctivitis could be the only first symptom of COVID-19. Thus, ophthalmologists should have an understanding of COVID-19 and develop related contingency plans and preventive measures. We aimed to provide medical services and, in the meantime, to show empathy and care on patients and their family members, and to use appropriate protection to ensure personal safety. We reviewed the COVID-19 presentations in ophthalmology and described the Guidelines of contingency plans implemented by the Department of Ophthalmology of Taipei City Hospital for the outbreak of COVID-19 in this article. The contingency plan includes sections of outpatient clinics, surgery, hospitalization, emergency and consultation, conference and future outlook during the post-epidemic period, and adjusts in a rolling manner with the immediate epidemic situation and emerging literature. We expect the ophthalmology team of the Taipei City Hospital to be remained committed to people-centered care. At the same time, under the threat of the pandemic, we continue to provide high-value medical services, improve patient and employee safety, and make specific contributions to ophthalmological medicine in Taiwan.
