Abstract
A continuous infusion of vasopressin was administered to two patients, one with acute artery bleeding and the other cirrhosis of the liver and bleeding esophageal varices. Both patients presented with subsequent complications following continuous infusion of vasopressin. Intra-arterial infusion of vasopressin was prescribed to treat patient 1, an 86-year-old man with upper gastrointestinal and persistent arterial bleeding. Cutaneous necrosis, peptic ulcer, and rhabdomyolysis-related acute renal failure were the subsequent complications. Patient 2 was a 52-year-old man with cirrhosis of the liver and esophageal bleeding. Cutaneous necrosis of the extremities and rhabdomyolysis developed following treatment with intravenous vasopressin. Both patients finally expired, one due to sepsis and multiple organ failure and the other due to massive bleeding and hypovolemic shock. Physicians should be alert to these rare complications before prescribing this drug.
