Abstract
This study focuses on the effect of uneven heat load on airflow uniformity and thermal performance in a small-scale datacenter with raised-floor. Experiments are conducted in a 20-foot container datacenter, including a total of 15 cases. These cases include both uniform and uneven heat loads, and various aisle configurations, including semi-enclosed cold aisle, semi-enclosed hot aisle, fully-enclosed cold aisle, fully-enclosed hot aisle, and no containment configuration. Additionally, the study also investigates the effect of reducing the total system airflow on airflow uniformity. By measuring temperature and airflow velocity, we obtain temperature and airflow distribution. The Supply Heat Index (SHI) is used to evaluate heat recirculation phenomena. The results show that in the cases of uneven heat load, the airflow difference between the two rack sides of semi-enclosed cold aisle and semi-enclosed hot aisle accounts for 5.8% and 4.9% of the total supply airflow, respectively. The airflow difference for fully-enclosed cold aisle and fully-enclosed hot aisle is 0.5% and 4.8%. For no containment, the airflow difference between the two sides accounts for 2.0%. At lower total system airflow, regardless of aisle configuration, airflow non-uniformity and heat recirculation are magnified.
