Abstract
In 2021, the buzzword '0' gained popularity in Hong Kong, with phrases such as '0尊' (meaning a lack of respect for someone) becoming commonplace in online forums and everyday conversations. As '0' is a new and increasingly popular term, there is limited research on this topic, making it both valuable and important to explore. In our study, we will investigate the following aspects: (1) Although the Chinese word '零' shares some similarities with '0' and can also be used negatively, we will examine the distinctions between these two terms and the contexts in which they are not interchangeable; (2) We will compare the use of '0' with other established negative words in Cantonese, such as m4, mou5, mei6 and mai5 and hypothesize that these preexisting words differ from '0'. Our research aims to clarify the meaning and grammatical rules of '0', determine whether its usage constitutes lexical or sentential negation, and identify limitations when employing '0' to convey specific meanings. Furthermore, the importance of the study of the buzzword is reflected. Due to the rapid changes in buzzword and the similarity of its mode of changes to those of traditional languages, examining buzzword has greatly facilitated the study of the changes in Cantonese syntax.
