Abstract
To understand the chemical composition of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted from leaf of 'Chamaecyparis formosensis' Matsum. and estimate their dynamic emission rates, three methods including hydrodistillation, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and in situ sampling were employed to extract BVOCs and analyzed by thermal desorptiongas chromatography-flame ionization detector (TD-GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results from hydrodistillation and SPME demonstrated that α-pinene dominated (>65%) in the BVOCs. Results from in situ sampling revealed that 'C. formosensis' leaf emitted α-pinene at the maximum rate of 175 ng hr^(-1)g^(-1) in daytime and the rate lower than 30 ng hr^(-1)g^(-1) in nighttime. Further analysis showed that the standard emission rate and β coefficient of α-pinene were 0.06 μg hr^(-1)g^(-1) and 0.12 K^(-1), respectively. Combining these results with the estimated biomass of leaves from the 'C. formosensis' sampled, the emission of α-pinene from this tree was estimated to be 113 μg hr^(-1) tree^(-1). The in situ sampling established in this study could gain our knowledge on the BVOCs emission in the field and obtain some coefficients for the estimation of BVOCs emission. These results could provide useful information for air quality control or promotion of forest recreation.
