Abstract
This essay briefly introduces finite difference method, which was adopted to solve a Laplace’s equation of electric potential with a view to promoting the simple but useful simulating technique. The basic concept of finite difference method is first explained, namely, approximation through Taylor expansion, the setting of mesh, and the three form of boundary conditions. Next, comparisons are made between theoretical and simulated capacitance of parallel-plate capacitor, cylindrical capacitor, and spherical capacitor. Last, the capacitances of non-standard-shape capacitors are computed, demonstrating the usefulness of the method.
