This report describes the three weeks nursing care experience of a patient with sleep apnea syndrome caused by obesity. The patient developed a fear of death, lost confidence toward treatment and attempted suicide due to the high frequency of breathing cessation during sleep. Patient data were collected through clinical evaluations, patient interview, observation and medical record review. Problems identified included more nutrition intake than needed, activity intolerance and fear. The patient was placed on BiPAP with support of a collaborative team effort including physicians, nurses, a respiratory case manager, registered dietitians, social workers and rehabilitation technicians. The patient's family was involved in the care process to ensure their competency to provide follow up care at home. The patient and family's concerns were addressed to reduce fear of unforeseen outcomes. The patient was able to build a positive attitude and move on with recovery.
