Abstract
In order to increase the sequential continuous casting ratio, to improve the quality of steel bloom/billet, and to lower the production cost, mold fluxes must be properly selected and applied. In this study, two kinds of commercially avaiable mold fluxes were tested. The main items under investigation included the properties of mold fluxes, the corrosion of submerged nozzle by mold slag, the oxide absorption ability of mold slag, and bloom/billet quality. It was found that; (1) the lower the viscosity of mold slag, the higher the corrosion rate of submerged nozzle; (2) the oxide absorption ability of flux A can be four times of that of flux B; (3) different mold flux results in different steel quality. Besides, it was also found that the cooperation between plant and lab is mutual beneficial.
