Abstract
Hakka people are the second largest ethnic group in Taiwan. Inheriting the Hakka people's spirit and culture, Hakka traditional sports need to be explored and preserved. This study collected data from the project called 'An Exploration and Image Record of Liu Dwei Hakka Traditional Sports- Taking Hakka Dancing Lion and Artillery Activity Festival as the example', sponsored by the Executive Yuan's Hakka Affairs Council for the purpose of developing Hakka research among universities in 2016. Through historical method, literature analysis, questionnaire survey, interview and observation, this study explored Liu Dwei Artillery Activity Festival, discussing its recent development、the significance of the activity、and motivation of the participants. Additionally, this study offered suggestions for future development. Subjects of the study are the participants of Liu Dwei Artillery Activity Festival in 2016, completing the survey of their motivation and cultural identity. The suggestions of the study are as follows. 1. It is urgent to look for the masters who could instruct the art of Hakka traditional Artillery Activity and give them a teaching platform to conserve the distinct traits of Liu Dwei Artillery Activity Festival before these master disappear. 2. It is vital to inherit the experience of senior people who are familiar with the spirit of traditional sport of Artillery Activity Festival in the village of Wu-Kou at Wan-Luan township. 3. It is necessary to advocate the sport of Artillery Activity Festival so that the Hakka culture could be preserved and inherited. Through participating in the artillery activity, participants become motivated to engage in the activity, and the levels of their cultural identity are also increased. The format of the artillery activity and the revitalization of the competition remain to be explored in the future study.
