Abstract
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, according to World Health Organization reported, accounting for nearing 10 million deaths in 2020. The key point of precision anti-cancer therapy is to give effectiveness of treatments that are most likely work, while avoiding giving side-effects and complications. Radiotherapy is commonly used in cancer care, but may cause acute- and long-term toxicities as an effects of radiation deposition in normal tissues surrounding cancer cell. Proton therapy making use of the characteristic Bragg Peak, can be delivered with precise energies to a desired depth and depositing energy. These advantages of proton therapy have demonstrated improve clinical outcomes and reduced side effects of therapy, as well as reserve better physical performance status and quality of life. In November 2015, the first Proton beam therapy center set up in Linkuo Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. The proton therapy center of Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH) is Taiwan’s first proton machine with superconducting cyclotron, set up in the prosperous downtown of Taipei in July 2022. After the very first patient with pediatric cancer treated in TMU proton center, more and more patients with advanced disease received proton therapy in TMU proton center. Proton therapy is a promising treatment option, which provide the effectiveness of radiation energy to be more concentrated and released at the tumor site, and reduce the damage at the normal tissues near the tumor.
