Abstract
Nowadays, the role of clinical laboratory science in the healthcare system is becoming more and more important, however, very few studies were conducted to explore the professionalism of clinical laboratory scientists. In particular, the complicated ethical and moral issues in the field of clinical laboratory science have been less explored. In this study, aiming to understand the professionalism of Taiwan clinical laboratory scientists, clinical laboratory interns and on-the-job clinical laboratory scientists were evaluated through answering a 10-question questionnaire which contains ethical and moral scenarios. We found that the correct rates of the clinical laboratory interns and the on-the-job clinical laboratory scientists were 40% to 88% and 56% to 97%, respectively. Compared to clinical laboratory interns, on-the-job clinical scientists had significantly higher correct rates of answering the five following scenarios: Interest exchange, sexual harassment, do not harm, honest record, and inappropriate medical requirements. Further analysis showed that the correct rate of answers in the seven scenarios was positively correlated with the rank of the clinical laboratory scientists, while the correct rate of men in the context of personal self-discipline and honest records was significantly lower than that of women. Herein, the investigation on the professionalism of Taiwan clinical laboratory scientists from this study may provide as a valid reference for government organizations or academic associations to organize training programs or develop ethical policies by in the future.
