Abstract
About the role of pentoxifylline in the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD), recent clinical evidence demonstrated that compared with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RAAS inhibitor) monotherapy, RAAS inhibitor plus pentoxifylline could further improve glucose control, reduce proteinuria, and even delay deterioration of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in patients with diabetic CKD and proteinuria. Moreover, shown by nationwide cohort studies, either pentoxifylline monotherapy or RAAS inhibitor plus pentoxifylline could reduce the risk of receiving long-term renal replacement therapy in patients with stage 5 CKD. However, whether pentoxifylline has therapeutic effects over non-diabetic CKD or CKD-related anemia is still not well proved.
