Abstract
Effective dose (E) and organ or tissue equivalent dose (HT) of Pediatric and Adult Phantoms undergoing brain CT examinations were evaluated. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) phantoms ranging from 10 to 90 kg derived from ICRU 48 were used to evaluate E herein. All scans were conducted by Philips computer tomography (Brilliance CT) at Lukang Christian Hospital with fixed exposure conditions. Equivalent doses were measured in the organs and tissues of interest via thermoluminescent dosemeter (TLD) approach and recommended by ICRP 103. Equivalent doses of brain for 10, 30, 70, and 90 kg PMMA were 46.6±1.83, 48.3±0.47, 54.2±0.06, and 48.9±0.51 mSv. E of these phantoms ranged from 1.91±0.04 to 2.26±0.09 mSv and 1.66 to 2.04 mSv during CT examinations according to ICRP 103 and AAPM 96, respectively. The DLP calculated effective doses for pediatric and adult were within 10.4% of the TLD calculated effective doses. The effective dose by ICRP 103 definition was primarily calculated based on tissue weighting factors and measured equivalent doses. Besides, the DLP conversion method for different weight is relatively assured for approximating effective dose and easy to use. Finally, experimental results are compared with those in literature. These findings are pertinent to patients, physicians, radiologists, and the public.
