Abstract
The purpose of this project was to improve clinical care of scabies following the 2018 scabies infection incident in the respiratory care ward, where investigations found 69% scabies care perception and 57.98% following hand hygiene practices with 52% of medical personnel performing correct hand hygiene practices. The analysis found that the main problems were lack of education training, no implementation of hand hygiene, no awareness of scabies skin characteristics with medications, and isolation of new patient preadmissions. Project strategies formulated annual scabies education and hand hygiene audits, revised standards, developed scabies picture identification cards and created personal databases, implemented a 3I protocol (identify, isolate and inform) and revised patient specifications. The outcome of medical staff perception of scabies after this project was increased from 69% to 97%, and hand hygiene practice rate and correctness respectively increased from 57.98% and 52% to 98.8% and 96%, with administration demonstrating improved quality of nursing care.
