Abstract
Background: Due to consuming time and greater effort to detect to conduct comprehensive geriatric assessment, an effective screening tool is needed to quickly identify older adults' health problems and efficiently provide appropriate intervention or transition care. The purpose of this study was to develop a screening tool for older adults and to assess its validity. Method: Based on literature review and experiences of clinical practice, a screening tool with 18 items (or questions) named FIND-NEEDS was developed. Seven experts in geriatrics and gerontology assessed, item by item, the intelligibility and applicability of the FIND-NEEDS screening tool by using a four-point Likert scale. Experts made comments or directly offered revision or correction in the 'Suggestion' column for an item receiving a score lower than 3 points. CVI (the Index of Content Validity) analysis was used to measure the consistency for the validity of the screening tool. Results: The first round of item-level content validity index (I-CVI) fell in the range of 0.71 to 1.0, with 4 questions scoring less than 0.8. After modifying the FIND-NEEDS screening tool based on the expert opinions, the second round of I-CVI score rose to 0.86 to 1.0. The S-CVI/UA (scale-level content validity index based on the universal agreement method) of expert opinion in the first round escalated from 0.5 to 0.94 in the second round. The S-CVI/Ave (scale-level content validity index based on the average method) was from 0.90 to 0.99. Conclusion: After assessed by experts for two rounds, the results show that FIND-NEEDS questionnaire can be used to screen the health problems of older adults effectively. Future research is needed after the FIND-NEEDS in put into practice in clinical settings to further test its applicability.
