Abstract
During the Japanese colonial period, private sales of calendars in Taiwan were mostly imported from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces of China. The annual publication, 'almanac' in the common term, is popular since it includes numerous information regarding specific dates. According to the present research, the colonial government forbade the Taiwanese people's use of imported calendars. However, this topic lacks discussions in detail. Calendar control of the Government of Taiwan includes the regulation of content and publication procedure. However, with publication control, some people still attempted to smuggle the forbidden calendars or printed and sold almanacs by violating the regulations. Among the calendars of private sales, the most popular one was the almanac edited by the descendants of Hung Zhao He, the master of dates in Fujian Province in China.
