Abstract
In order to evaluate the potential of bio-methane production using different fruit wastes as feedstock, effects of added weight ratio of feedstocks including banana, watermelon, pitaya, pomelo and passion fruit on bio-methane production through the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test were investigated in this study. The BMP test results could be used as the database for a biogas production center. Evaluations of the biogas production activity of anaerobic sludges obtained from different swine wastewater treatment facilities were operated in serum bottles (250 mL) under the mesophilic temperature condition. Anaerobic sludges with higher biogas production performance collected from three wastewater treatment plants were mixed and used to evaluate the potential of biomethane production from fruit wastes. In the first batch of BMP tests using microcrystalline cellulose as a reference substrate and inoculum to substrate ratio (ISR) of 2, the mixed sludge performed specific biogas production, specific methane production and methane content of 421.9±35.5 mL biogas/g VS, 199.1±16.5 mL CH_4/g VS, and 47.2%, respectively. Using the same mixed sludge as seeding with banana and watermelon whole fruit pulps as substrates, the results of BMP tests with three different ISR indicated that the batch with ISR of 1 attained the highest specific biogas production, specific methane production and net methane production, after 20 days of anaerobic digestion. The specific biogas yields of 541.6±42.8 mL biogas/g VS and 660.3±64.1 mL biogas/g VS, the specific methane yields of 219.8±3.6 mL CH_4/g VS and 213.1±48.2 mL CH_4/g VS, and the net methane yields of 216.1mL CH_4/g VS and 209.4 mL CH_4/g VS were obtained using banana and watermelon as substrates, respectively. Under the same experimental conditions, the mixed sludge with the specific biogas production of 508.2±54.8 mL biogas/g VS, specific methane production of 230.2±22.5 mL CH_4/ g VS and methane content of 45.3% was used as seeding for biomethane potential tests using pitaya, pomelo and passion fruit as substrates. The results of BMP tests with three different ISR indicated that the pitaya substrates with ISR of 2 obtained the highest specific biogas production of 742.8±11.5 mL biogas/g VS, specific methane yield of 234.7±57.7 mL CH_4/ g VS and net methane yield of 232.5 mL CH_4/g VS, while pomelo and passion fruit substrates with ISR of 3 performed the highest specific biogas production of 681.5±13.9 mL biogas/g VS and 1,104.9±126.7 mL biogas/g VS, specific methane yield of 214.7±25.4 mL CH_4/g VS and 425.6±37.7 mL CH_4/g VS and net methane yield of 212.4 mL CH_4/g VS 及423.4 mL CH_4/g VS, respectively. Based on the results, it was suggested that the restricted adding weight ratios were 30% for watermelon, 15% for banana and pitaya, 10% for passion fruit, and 5% for pomelo.
