Abstract
This case study reports the psychophysiologic problems and adjusting behaviors for a patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma during therapy. From April 30, 2001 to July 6, 2001, interviews and observation and listening techniques were used to collect data and complete thirteen detailed records from a patient after she was informed she had nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Findings were as follows. From a physical perspective, the patient felt pain, nausea, vomiting, and had no appetite. From a psychological perspective, she feared dying, and experienced hopelessness and weakness. Adjusting behaviors included dealing with the emotion of anger and feelings of fate, negotiation, searching for more information and more social supports. During the initial hospitalization, the patient obtained information from same diagnosed patients and received support from friends and relatives, and information from the author. These interventions helped reduce her feelings of sadness and emptiness.
