Abstract
Leptospiral seroprevalence of stray dogs at northern Taiwan was studied and sera were collected from 241 dogs in animal shelters from Feb to Jul, 2004. The overall seropositive rate was 45.6% (110/241) and the prevalence of individual serogroups was L. Shermani 27.8%, L. Canicola 13.3%, L. Icterohaemorrhagiae 9.5%, L. Australis 6.2%, L. Pyrogenes 5.8%, L. Javanica 4.1%, L. Grippotyphosa 3.7%, L. Bataviae 3.3%, L. Tarassovi 1.7%, L. Lyme 1.3%, and L. Autumnalis 0.8%. It showed the seropositive rate of stray dogs was higher than domestic dogs and the prevalence distribution of serogroups between domestic dogs and stray dogs was significantly different. The stray dogs were found with L. Grippotyphosa infection.
